FDA Fiber Daily Value: 28 g, Prebiotic Fiber and Resistant Starch Explained
The FDA Daily Value for dietary fiber is 28 g a day. Fiber is a carbohydrate the body cannot digest, and some fibers act as prebiotics by feeding gut bacteria. SodaTide's inulin and resistant starch lines add up to about 0.3 g, roughly 1% of that value. A fast rise in fiber can cause gas and bloating.

The number01
What is the FDA Daily Value for dietary fiber?
The FDA Daily Value for dietary fiber is 28 g a day, on a 2,000-calorie diet. It is the reference number printed on food labels as "% Daily Value".
Fiber is a carbohydrate the body cannot digest, and most Americans get only about 15 g a day (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber). The National Academy of Medicine gives age-based amounts, listed below (Mayo Clinic, Dietary fiber). Whole foods are generally better than fiber supplements, and Mayo Clinic suggests checking with a health care professional before taking one.
| Group | Up to age 50 | After age 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Women | 25 g | 21 g |
| Men | 38 g | 30 g |
| FDA Daily Value on labels | 28 g, one number for all adults | |
The terms02
Is fiber a prebiotic?
Some fiber is, and some is not. A prebiotic is a food component the body does not digest that gut microorganisms can use, found mainly in high-fiber foods (Mayo Clinic, Probiotics and prebiotics).
Harvard splits fiber by whether bacteria ferment it. Fermentable fiber feeds gut bacteria and produces short-chain fatty acids, while psyllium and cellulose are not fermentable (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber). So a prebiotic is nearly always a fiber, but not every fiber works as a prebiotic.
Harvard's nutrition team also says quality evidence for prebiotic supplements is still little (Harvard Health, Should you take probiotics?). A fiber-rich diet is its suggested route to feeding gut bacteria.
The difference03
Is prebiotic fiber the same as fiber?
No. Fiber is the wide group, and prebiotic fiber is the part of it that gut bacteria ferment and use as food. The words describe different things: fiber describes what the body cannot digest, and prebiotic describes what bacteria do with it.
| Term | Plain meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Soluble fiber | Forms a gel and slows digestion (Mayo Clinic, Dietary fiber) | Inulin |
| Insoluble fiber | Adds bulk to stool (Mayo Clinic, Dietary fiber) | Not covered here |
| Fermentable fiber | Feeds gut bacteria (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber) | Inulin, resistant starch |
| Non-fermentable fiber | Passes through without feeding bacteria (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber) | Psyllium, cellulose |
| Prebiotic | A fermentable food component that microorganisms use (Mayo Clinic, Probiotics and prebiotics) | Inulin |
Inulin is a soluble fiber from chicory root (Cleveland Clinic, Inulin). Resistant starch is a soluble, fermentable fiber that acts as a prebiotic (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber). Whether a supplement line is counted toward the 28 g is up to the label. SodaTide prints "Daily Value not established" for both.
Resistant starch04
What is resistant starch, and is it fiber?
Resistant starch is starch that skips digestion in the small intestine and is fermented in the large intestine. It behaves like a fermentable fiber, which is why Harvard lists it among the soluble fibers (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber).
It comes in types. Type 2 is raw starch in unripe bananas and raw potatoes, and type 3 forms when starchy foods are cooked, then cooled (Cleveland Clinic, Resistant starch). Studies used about 1 to 66 g a day (Baptista 2024, Resistant starch narrative review). US intake is about 4 g a day, and there is no official recommendation (Harvard Health, Resistant starch).
Our potato starch guide goes through raw, cooked and capsule forms.

How much fiber is in SodaTide?
Two of its three printed lines are fiber-type ingredients: 211 mg of chicory root inulin and 100 mg of potato resistant starch. That is 311 mg, or 0.311 g, per capsule.
Against the 28 g Daily Value, 0.311 g is about 1%. The label prints no fiber grams and no percent. Type your own foods into the meter below to see how a day compares.

0 g typed so far. The FDA Daily Value for dietary fibre is 28 g on a 2,000-calorie diet (FDA, Daily Value on the Nutrition and Supplement Facts labels).
Fibre that ferments in the gut can cause gas and bloating, mostly when intake rises quickly (Mayo Clinic, Dietary fiber). The label amounts are far below the gram doses used in most trials. Your own numbers stay in your browser tab and are never sent anywhere.
Study doses of fiber are usually grams, and the capsule is milligrams. That does not make it safe or unsafe. It means trial results cannot be copied onto it. The ingredient pages cover chicory root inulin and potato resistant starch.

Why does more fiber cause gas, and how do you add it slowly?
Gas forms when bacteria in the large intestine break down carbohydrate that was not digested. Too much fiber, or a quick jump in fiber, can increase it (NIDDK, Gas in the Digestive Tract: eating, diet, nutrition).
Mayo Clinic says to add fiber over a few weeks, drink plenty of water, and that adding too much too quickly can cause gas, bloating and cramping (Mayo Clinic, Dietary fiber). Harvard adds that people with irritable bowel syndrome may be sensitive to inulin-type fibers (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber).
- Change one fiber source at a time and wait a few days.
- Drink water through the day, and with any capsule.
- Keep a short food and symptom note, as NIDDK suggests.
Weight07
Does fiber help with weight loss?
Fiber can help you feel full, but the evidence for prebiotic fiber as a weight tool is thin. Harvard does not present fiber as a weight-loss method (Harvard Nutrition Source, Fiber).
Pooled trials of prebiotics found about 0.9 kg less weight than placebo after a median 12 weeks, with a fragile result (Kunnackal John 2018, Gut microbiome diet and weight meta-analysis). The NIH says little is known about whether weight-loss supplements work (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss (health professional)). For habits, CDC suggests a steady pace of about 1 to 2 pounds a week (CDC, Steps for Losing Weight).
- Talk to a clinician firstA clinician can check medicines, thyroid, sleep and other medical causes of weight change, and say which products to avoid. (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely)
- Build the plateFibre comes mostly from vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains. Raise it slowly and drink water. (Mayo Clinic, Dietary fiber)
- Move most daysAdults are advised to be active for at least 150 minutes a week, plus muscle work on two days. (CDC, Steps for Losing Weight)
- Sleep and stressShort sleep and long stress change appetite for many people, and both are free to fix first. (CDC, Steps for Losing Weight)
- Check any supplement against the factsWeight-loss supplements have little reliable evidence of large effects, and some contain hidden drugs. (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss (health professional)) (FDA, Weight Loss Product Notifications)
- Review everything you takeTell every provider about every supplement. A pharmacist can check interactions. (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely)
Ask first08
Who should ask a clinician before using a fiber supplement?
Ask first if you take diabetes medicine, have a gut condition such as irritable bowel syndrome, are pregnant or nursing, are under 18, or have surgery coming. Keep taking every prescribed medicine.
Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause low blood sugar, and skipped meals are one cause (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose (Hypoglycemia)). Tell every provider about supplements before a procedure (ASA, Herbal and Dietary Supplements and Anesthesia). The FDA warns that weight-loss products are often found with hidden drugs (FDA, Weight Loss Product Notifications). We found no public test, FDA notice or warning letter for SodaTide, and that proves nothing.

Where does SodaTide fit in a fiber plan?
As a very small addition. At 0.311 g of fiber-type ingredients, a capsule does not change a fiber day. Food does that.

SodaTide questions people ask
How many grams of fiber should I eat a day?
The FDA Daily Value is 28 g. Age-based amounts are 25 g for women and 38 g for men up to age 50, and 21 g and 30 g after. Most Americans eat about 15 g.
Does the FDA regulate fiber supplements?
Fiber supplements are dietary supplements, so the FDA does not approve them before sale. The maker must follow the label rules and keep claims truthful. Ask a clinician first.
Is inulin a soluble fiber?
Yes. Cleveland Clinic calls inulin a soluble fiber that forms a gel and slows stomach emptying. It is also fermentable, so it feeds gut bacteria.
Does resistant starch count as dietary fiber?
It acts like one, a soluble and fermentable fiber, and Harvard lists it that way. Whether a supplement line counts toward the 28 g depends on how the label lists it.
Can fiber supplements interact with medicines?
Possibly. Mayo Clinic says to check with a health care professional before taking fiber supplements. Ask your pharmacist about your own medicine list.
